A project fund of £700,000 has been made available to support Local Authorities in their efforts to bolster reuse and recycling of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). Provided by electrical retailers as part their obligations under the WEEE Regulations, this third phase of the WEEE Distributor Takeback Scheme (DTS) encourages Local Authorities and their partner organisations to come forward with innovative and practical projects aiming to drive up reuse of whole appliances, increase the tonnage of separately collected domestic WEEE for recycling or to boost the recycling rate of collected equipment.
A panel of experts put together by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills will value in particular those proposals able to sustain themselves even when the initial project funding expires, although there is potential for further funding towards the end of 2015. Those wishing to apply will have until 27th February 2015 to do so.
